Economic Abuse Awareness Day

Economic abuse is experienced by women the world over and and yet it is still not widely recognised as a form of coercive control. That's why we recognise the 26th November as Economic Abuse Awareness Day.

Economic Abuse Awareness Day began in Canada in 2019 when the Canadian Centre for Women’s Empowerment (CCFWE) called for greater recognition of the issue. In 2021, the Centre for Women’s Economic Safety (Australia), Surviving Economic Abuse (UK), Good Shepherd (New Zealand), the Institute for Social Development and Justice (South Africa) and Women’s Spirit (Israel) joined the campaign in an informal coalition.

In 2022, we published Making a Difference: International Responses to Economic Abuse a report which examined developments across our six countries.

The Coalition is calling for International Economic Abuse Awareness Day to be recognised by the United Nations (UN). We provide support to country actors calling on their national governments to do the same.

On 26 November 2025 we will be using the hashtags #AwarenessToAction and #EconomicAbuseAwarenessDay25 - do tag us in your posts!
